Smallpox innoculation had been developed in the 1700s, but it was risky. Edward Jenner spent 18 years studying the how exposure to cowpox made one immune to smallpox. Having performed his first vaccination on a young boy, he found that his vaccinations were successful. This completed the trend of eliminating smallpox as after this discovery, Jenner's new treatment would spread around the world.
