Stalin→ “too rude”, “incapable of using his authority well”
Trotsky→ “most capable” “excessive self-assurance”
- Lenin’s testament was read out at a meeting of the Central Committee, where Lenin’s potential successors were present.
- Party agreed that the Testament was not to be made public as all were criticised
- ignore Lenin’s warning.
Stalin retained his position as Secretary-General → used this position to put more supporters in the Central Committee → outvote and remove Trotsky during party election → no more rivals → Stalin most powerful
