My perspective: The Natives were hostile towards the settlers due to previous encounters with explorers being quite detrimental to them.

17th century perspective: The colonists likely saw this as pointless savagery by the Natives, as Natives were, from the colonists' perspectives, prone to do. (P. Harvey)
