I had a male student, *Eddie, on my caseload who I really liked. I also taught his sister. I had a great relationship with his mom as well. However, Eddie struggled to come to school sober. After a rough first quarter, we expelled Eddie (for the one quarter minimum), and he sought drug treatment. In addition to some grief counseling (his dad passed away when he was 7), he sought drug treatment counseling, and had to get a job before he was welcomed back.
Eddie was the first student who I had ever had expelled. Needless to say, he didn't love me. However, when Eddie returned for the spring semester, we got him into a Culinary Arts Program at our neighboring career and technical school for half of his days, and he thrived.
