1 sett 1990 anni - Dr. W. French Anderson

Descrizione:

Dr. W. French Anderson from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute was the first to treat a four year old girl with gene therapy. This girl had adenosine deaminase (ADA) which affected her immunity to sickness since she lacked sufficient white blood cells. In 1985, Anderson and his colleague Michael Blease worked to demonstrate how cells from people affected by ADA could be changed in tissue culture. They used a retrovirus in order to carry the correct ADA gene into the cells. In 1989, Anderson and Blease teamed with Dr. Steven Rosenberg to test how gene therapy would work for people with cancer. Lastly, by September 1990, the four year old girl and another nine year old girl with ADA were infused with their own corrected cells over two years, and this was the start of gene therapy. This advancement would be beneficial to society because there are many people that suffer from some form of cancer.
