Napoleon crowned himself Emperor of France on December 2, 1804, in order to show the people of France the great power he held. The Pope was supposed to crown Napoleon during the ceremony but instead, Napoleon put the crown on his own head which demonstrated to the French people that Napoleon thought he was above everyone else in society.
