Samuel J. Tilden vs Rutherford B Hayes. Rutherford was on the republican side due to Grants declining health and his scandals. Tilden was the democratic nominee. The election was tildens till hayes disputed the claims for 20 electoral votes. Lead to the creation of the special electoral commission, and the compromise of 1877
