After censors intercepted copies of 'We' travelling out of Russia Zamyatin was arrested again. Maxim Gorky, the 'godfather of Socialist Realist literature', was a friend and personally appealed to Stalin for Zamyatin's release. He was permitted to leave, but remain in exile in Paris.
