23 gen 1922 anni - Discovery of Insulin (Social)
Descrizione:
Who:
A team at the University of Toronto, including Dr. Frederick Banting, Charles Best, J. B. Collip, and their supervisor, J. J. R. Macleod.
What:
Banting and Best first tested the pancreatic extracts on laboratory dogs. Once they thought it was safe enough to be used on humans, Banting injected a 14-year-old boy, Leonard Thompson who had been suffering from diabetes for three years, with insulin. His blood sugar levels dropped and he gained strength.
Where:
University of Toronto, Ontario and Toronto General Hospital, Ontario
Why:
The only treatments for diabetes in those days were starvation diets and exercise routines. This caused thousand of diabetics to become blind, have their limbs amputated, and led some to death. Banting wanted to find a better way to treat people with diabetes.
How:
People with diabetes were not able to absorb sugars and starches from their bloodstream because a hormone, called insulin, was missing. Banting thought that if he was able to isolate the insulin in animals, he could then use it to treat people suffering from diabetes. Banting and Best conducted hundreds of experiments on laboratory dogs. James Collip then developed a method to make the animal insulin safe for human to be injected with.
This was significant because millions of people around the work suffer from diabetes. The discovery of insulin brought a quality of life to diabetics, and they stopped worrying about when they would near the end of their lives. It benefited many people with diabetes because they were finally able to lower their blood sugar levels, live longer, healthier lives. This was one of the earliest successes in medical research.
