The first hydrogen bomb was constructed by the United States. The thought of having a new nuclear weapon created jealousy between the Soviet Union and the U.S. which created an arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Shortly after, the Soviet Union decided to make their own H-Bomb to prove that they are just as advanced in comparison to the U.S.

This relates best to the term deterrence because the U.S was trying to discourage the Soviets from becoming more advanced by doing it first.
