9 giug 1772 anni - The Gaspee Incident

Descrizione:

The Gaspee was a ship in the service of the British Navy. Her mission was to intercept and detain smugglers, while confiscating their cargo.

The vessels commander, Lt. William Duddington, had earned a reputation as a ruthless and somewhat overzealous enforcer that boarded ships and took cargos, often without any charges. Losses to the colonies amounted to a large sum.

On June 9, 1772, while patrolling near Newport, Rhode Island, The Gaspee was baited into pursuing another vessel that lured the British vessel into the shallows, where she ran aground.

The vessel was boarded, the captain and crew manhandled and left ashore, the ships cargo ransacked, and then the vessel itself was burned.

Even though the attackers were well known and readily pointed out by the ships company, no arrests were ever made.
