The event that was pivotal in the headlong rush towards revolution was, in fact, nothing more than a street fight turned riot.
British Captain Thomas called in additional soldiers after a sentinel was attacked by 50 citizens of the city.
The additional soldiers were also attacked by the mob and began firing into the crowd. This resulted in a total of 11 people injured and killed, and it was used by writers to inflame public opinion against the British.
There were calls for the Captain and his men to be tried for murder, which they were, however they were acquitted. Two soldiers were later found guilty of manslaughter.
