18 ottob 1929 anni - The "Persons" Case (Social)

Descrizione:

Who:
Emily Murphy, Henrietta Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, and Irene Parlby (the Famous 5).

What:
Women were not considered "persons" in this time. The Supreme Court ruled women were not "qualified persons" after the Famous 5 brought the matter to their attention. In 1929, the Privy Council announced women were officially considered "persons" and could become senators.

Where:
Ottawa, Ontario (Supreme Court of Canada), London, England (Privy Council)

How:
On August 27, 1927, Emily Murphy invited Henrietta Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, and Irene Parlby to her house for tea to discuss the issue and sign a letter petitioning the Supreme Court of Canada to look into the matter of appointing women for Senate. The Famous 5 then went to London, England where the case was taken seriously by the Privy Council.

This was significant because women were legally recognized as "persons", so this was the point in time when women were beginning to be taken more seriously. This led to Cairine Wilson to become Canada's first female senator. Women were no longer denied rights and they could work for greater rights and opportunities through the Senate and the House of Commons. However, women still struggled for equality.
