The Battle of Antietam was the single bloodiest day in the Civil War, with 22,000 casualties in 24 hours.

Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to invade the North, and met Union General George McClellan at Antietam Creek. The battle was technically a Union victory, but both sides suffered heavy losses.

The Emancipation Proclamation was ready to be released before this, but the Cabinet feared it would seem desperate after multiple Union losses.
