In 1732, King George II granted a charter to create a colony, the 13th and final English colony in the New World. It was meant to be a military "buffer" between Spanish controlled Florida and the British colonies to the north. James Oglethorpe and 114 colonists took the two month sea voyage to the mouth of the Savannah River. They made landfall, and founded the colony. Slavery was prohibited in the colony, as well as large land holdings; the colonists would live on and tend small farms. Grew to be the largest state east of the Mississippi River.
