Hannibal starts to campaign with his father at the age of 18 along with Hasdrubal age 15

At this age Hannibal will witness a betrayal that would lead to the death of his father.

Hamilcar was betrayed by the Oretani when he decided to use their power instead of the power of his own troops. They outnumbered him because he made the military decision to send most of his troops home. He sacrificed his self and the remainder of his troops to save his sons sending them one way and leading the rest of his troops the other.

Upon his father's death Hannibal did not take control of the army it was voted upon and Hasdrubal took command of the army

This allowed Hannibal to mature and learn more if he had taking command of the army right after the death of his father he would not have been as well loved by his troops and he'd be lacking knowledge which would have led to more losses in battle.
