On September 4th, the Little Rick Nine attempted to attend Central High for the first time, but they were barred from entering the building because the Arkansas National Guard blocked all of the entrances. They were taunted and abused by an angry crowd on their way to and from school. This situation really opened Melba's eyes to the danger of what she was doing, but that didn't stop her from doing what she felt like was right and important.
