- Clitus was a high ranking general who was close to Alexander during his conquests, even saving his life at one point
- In 328, at a party where everyone was drinking, Alexander's officers starting praising Alexander and diminishing his father, Philip. This angered Clitus as he had known Alexander's father so he started to praise Philip
- In a drunken rage, Alexander took insult to his praise and killed Clitus on the spot. He regretted after he was sober and even considered suicide but he eventually moved on.
