The Cultural Revolution was lead by the infamous Mao Zedong during the years of the revolution (1966-1976). The aim of the Cultural Revolution was to bring back socialism/communism. To do that, Zedong wanted to cleanse the state, the party, the middle class and changing the opinions of those who were okay with the political status quo. To achieve his goal, he rallied and distressed troops made out of students from universities and schools who were loyal to him. They later became the Red Guards. The Red Guards from Beijing punished people who did not like Zedong’s changed or did not like Zedong himself and they succeeded in achieving Zedong’s goal by their sheer work in numbers (1 million people) and violence which caused years of disruptions in the economy, social violence, intimidation and restriction of freedom for the ordinary people. Zedong achieved political power again, having lost it when he surrendered the presidency to Liu Shaoqi. The ten years it lasted was ten years of horror, violence, famine, death and killings. It thankfully ended in 1976, but with at least 3 million dead people and 100 million people who suffered in some way or another. With Mao’s death, the ten years were finally over - but the terror wasn’t over yet. After the revolution, there was a huge generation gap for anyone who experience the Cultural Revolution in their teens and early 20s as they were denied jobs and education.
