English general John Burgoyne led a large invasion force south from Canada, hoping to meet two similar armies coming north from New York and west from Lake Ontario. The other armies never showed up, leading Burgoyne to be surrounded in upstate New York. After a few attempts to break out of the village of Saratoga where he was surrounded failed, he surrendered his entire army.
