"The Crystal Cave" is a retelling of the Arthurian Legend by British author Mary Stewart. It was around this time (during the 70's, on) that retellings of fairy tales and legends became more popular. Retellings had been done before, but more authors in Mary Stewart's time decided to put their own spin on tales already told. Mary Stewart's version of Arthur is a little darker than stories such as "The Sword In the Stone", and "The Once & Future King". In addition to this statement, a concept to note about the retellings in this time is that they--like "The Crystal Cave"--had a darker tone than their originals, usually. Things to note about the author herself is that Mary Stewart was the one who created the Romance Mystery genre. She was better known, however, for her Merlin series. The series is one which crosses genres--Historical Fiction and Fantasy. Mary Stewart was also known to have inspired other authors through her Romantic Suspense story-lines. She was considered one of the most influential authors in her time, and, along with Tolkien's books, inspired others to read "The Sword In the Stone"--a book that is known as the most well-known of the Arthurian Legends.
