264-241 B.C. marked the first Punic War. This war started because Rome decided to intervene in a dispute on the western coast of the island of Sicily involving an attack by soldiers from Syracuse against the city of Messina. Rome was on Messina’s side and they rebuilt their entire navy fleet in order to win. Rome gained control Sicily and Corsica
