The Boston Port Bill was officially made a law on March 31, 1774, but took effect on June 1, 1774. The Boston Port Bill denied the colonists access to the Boston Harbor until they paid for the 342 chests of tea destroyed in the Boston Tea Party. Parliament passed this act as punishment for the Boston Tea Party. This was a part of the Intolerable Acts, otherwise known as the Coercive Acts. The Intolerable Acts caused the colonies to unite their protests and join the First Continental Congress on September 1774.
