Mildred and Richard Loving went to Washington to marry because it was illegal in Virginia. When they moved back to Virginia in the middle of the night officers broke into their home and arrested them for being married. They were banned from living there. They appealed their conviction to the Supreme Court who overturned it and went in favor of Virginia. In the end the Supreme Court banned the laws outlawing interracial marriage.
