The birth of opera as a genre was roughly 1600, and it was created by the Florentines to revive the Greek drama. Opera basically an accompanied solo song, often interspersed with brief instrumental works that highlight the dramatic action.

Operas contain to important sub-genres, the RECITATIVE and the ARIA. The former is a song that mimics normal speech, and is used to forward the action of the drama. It is nonmetrical and contains no beat, and lacks the melody of the Aria.

The Aria is a song for a soloist and accompaniment(orchestra), has a strong beat, and often repeats sections of the text for emphasis and to show off the technical prowess of the performers.
