The Peace of Westphalia was the treaty that largely ended the Thirty Year's War. In it, the Netherlands were officially independent of Spain, the Holy Roman Empire's power was broken, Sweden gained Baltic control, and France rose as the dangerously eminent Western power, and German states could determine their own religion. This peace created over decades of war brought acknowledgement to how the states of power had changed, and ended much of the religious controversy that had broken out during the Protestant Reformation.
