A prominent political party that consisted of middle and working class Americans. They opposed immigration in fear of losing their job due to competition. They gained control of some legislature for a while, and advocated for laws that would prevent Catholics and immigrants from having power in the government, and to deny them jobs. Immigrants faced much more challenges trying to assimilate into America.
