As Nigeria continues fracture, and the success of the American operation in Nicaragua fresh in the minds of Chinese policymakers and global pundits, China is forced to send an expeditionary force of peacekeepers to the country, its largest and furthest foreign deployment up to this point. Chinese forces occupy the city of Lagos. However, as it becomes evidently clear their primary focus is to protect Chinese business interests, resentment for the occupation grows. This resentment is readily exploited by the United States, which ends up going as far as attacking Chinese supply lines in covert operations disguised as piracy.

As peacekeeping roles expand, the mission increasingly becomes one of counterinsurgency, and the mission focus expands to nearby Ghana, albeit with aid from France
