The release of Steamboat Willie in November 1928 began the golden age of animated films. Walt Disney used the short film to introduce his very popular characters Micky and Minnie Mouse.
With a budget of $4,986, Steamboat Willie was the first animated film with synchronised sound. This introduced the method sound cartoon. Walt Disney was the first person to give importance to the animated sector of the film and tv industry.
People were concerned that it wasn't going to be popular so a short clip was shown to the wives and children of the men who worked at Disney. The soundtrack had not been produced yet so a team of employees did it live. It was a huge success with the response being extemely positive. The film was release on the 18th November 1928 and although was not actually the first cartoon one magazine said it was the first to “to attract favourable attention”.
Steamboat Willie was very significant in the development of TV and film as it heightened the success of the animated sector. The film was also the first of many more from Disney who is now one the worlds household names and one of the most well-known companies.
