The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V desired to unite his empire under Catholicism, however his empire contained an extremely diverse collection of states. However, the German princes didn't like being under the emperor's control so they embraced Lutheranism. The result was fighting between the two sides. The emperor ended up losing due to the Protestants receiving support from France, and the emperor resorted to signing the Peace of Augsburg to end the fighting. It officially recognized Lutheranism, allowed the political authority in each territory to choose between Catholicism and Lutheranism, and let each territory practice their religion in peace. Since there was no religious freedom within each territory, migration between territories was common. The Peace ended religious war in Germany for many decades. However, tensions still existed since other denominations such as Calvinism were still not recognized. These unresolved hostilities led to the Thirty Years' War. In addition, Charles' abdication led to the divide of his empire into two sections: Spain and the Netherlands and Austria.
