1 gen 1950 anni - Post-War British Culture
Descrizione:
The early 1950s in Britain were in many ways shaped by the two World Wars that had shaken the continent over the past half-century. The men of most families had served in wars for two generations, and many wondered if the upcoming third generation would face a similar future. Britain spent more on defense than any country other than the Soviet Union during the year of 1950, and they became a nuclear power in 1952 after their first successful nuclear test. Many wartime regulations, such as the rationing of butter and tea, were still in effect well after the end of WWII, and taxes were more than double their current rates. Additionally, many military bases that had been abandoned at the end of the previous war were reactivated in response to the onset of the Cold War. Britain in the 1950s functioned in many ways a continuation of wartime militarism, leading to novels such as Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.
