Thomas Hutchinson was a chief justice and lieutenant governor of Massachusetts. After the Stamp Act was put in place, rumors spread that Hutchinson was encouraging it when he actually opposed it. An angry crowd of Bostonians came in and attacked his home and destroyed or carried off most of their belongings.
