431 BCE - 404 BCE The Peloponnesian Wars were a series of battles fought between the Delian League and the Peloponnesian League (also known as the anti-Athens league). Tensions arose after Athens used money that was given to them by other Greek states for security against future attacks for their own state. Sparta then formed the Peloponnesian League (backed by Persia) and went to war with the Athenian Delian League. The wars resulted in the defeat of the Athenian Empire. (2.2)
