In 2000, after earning her master's degree, Jesmyn Ward's brother Joshua died after being hit by a drunk driver. The white driver who hit him was never prosecuted. Ward planned on going into a "practical" profession such as a doctor or lawyer, however, after his death, everything changed for her. She decided that she must become a writer. Ward says that "I couldn't run from that desire to tell stories, that desire to tell stories about us, and about the people I loved" (Block).
