Haiti gained independence from France in 1804 with the help of General Toussiant L'Ouverture. The revolution in Haiti broke out with the Slave Revolt which was a movement by slaves, who dominated the Haitian population, for rights and control in the country. The Haitian people wanted the same rights that French citizens demanded through the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen. The Haitian independence movement was a successful slave revolt that made Haiti the first independent black nation in the western hemisphere.
