The pet rock fad was interesting because the item that consumers paid $4 (American) for was a round, smooth rock. The Pet Rock would be worth $17.58 today. Inside each box, there was an instruction manual on how to train the "pet". These instructions were humorous jokes that made obvious remarks. There was no purpose of this product other than to entertain people.

The Pet Rock fad was most popular in December 1975, and soon became a popular Christmas present. Parents bought the toy for their children, making them believe the rock was their only gift they would receive. It was also popular among young adults who bought the pet rocks as a joke to their friends.

The man behind the million-dollar fad was Gary Dhal, who constantly heard from his friends the hassles of caring for a real pet. This inspired him to start selling pet rocks, initially as a joke, which later made him millions.
