Napoleon Bonaparte made plans to conquer Europe, but he was running out of funds. He did the only thing he could do without losing any land in Europe: sell the recently acquired land (from the Spanish) in America. Thomas Jefferson decided that it would be a great way to double the USA's size and to obtain power over the whole Mississippi River. The Senate quickly approved the offer and the US had around 15 more states to add to its name.
