Robert Hooke viewed these objects and made observations in a book called Micrographia. He started with a thin cutting cork and discovered the microscopic holes in the material. He named these pores. This led to his discovery of cells after he begun to study plants. He calculated that the number of cells per cubic inch in a cork is 1,239,712,000.
