Goeppert-Mayer came up with a nuclear shell model for atoms in which each nucleus had a shell structure for protons and neutrons similar to the electron shell structure. It was found that nuclei with 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, or 126 protons or neutrons were more stable than others.
