In 1885, Boers from he South African Republic [Transvaal] fled to southern Angola. After conflict with Portuguese colonial authorities, the Boers declared the Republic of Upingtonia.

The State received recognition from Germany and most of the British Self-Governing Colonies in the region. Local British activities in Hereroland would lead to the Portuguese not acting against the minor country.
