The 14th Amendment follows the unequal part of the 13th Amendment. The main part of the 14th Amendment addresses the problems of citizenship rights and equal protection of laws. The only states that heavily opposed this Amendment were the defeated Confederate States. However, the only way for them to regain representation in Congress was to ratify this Amendment. The 14th Amendment was ratified on July 9, 1868. The 14th Amendment made huge steps forward as it provided equal laws to all people, including non citizens, within its jurisdiction.
