Being the world’s oldest painting, this wall painting in the Chauvet Cave surpasses the wall paintings at Altamira, Lascaux, and Pech-Merle by its sophisticate compositional and painting techniques. Composed of 20 animals, the painting depicts the animals realistically by overlapping and contrasting. Charcoal was used to draw the Aurochs first, then the rhinoceroses, and last the horses, adding a contrast effect to the artwork.
Each animals is depicted uniquely drawn by quick and energetic curve lines. The painting lively express the fights of the rhinoceroses; the emotions and crash between them is manifested. Besides, stump-drawing technique and together with scraping can be found in the panels.
