Chadwick built heavily upon Rutherford’s model by actually proving it. Rutherford theorized that the nucleus was surrounded by an empty space, but when Chadwick conducted an experiment in which he bombarded beryllium atoms with alpha particles he found neutrons or subatomic particles that are actually inside the nucleus. This contributed greatly to the atomic theory, Rutherford gave a very rudimentary representation of an atom but Chadwick built on that by saying there is actually something that can be found within the nucleus.
