An American psychologist, Robert B. Miller exemplifies the role psychologists played in developing training systems after World War II. Miller was one of many psychologists who assisted in successful military training programs during the war and continued instructional design work after the war by analyzing training practices. Specifically, Miller published "A Method for Man-Machine Task Analysis," in 1953, where he laid out detailed instructions for efficiently and ethically analyzing the operational effectiveness of Air Force service members after completing training for a "man-machine system" (Reiser: "Part I," 2001, pg. 58). Miller's publication, along with the publications of other psychologists, sparked a movement to research best instructional and training practices.
