The treaty officially ended the American Revolutionary War and recognised America is its own, independent nation. In addition to Great Britain formally recognizing the colonies as an independent nation, the treaty also secured fishing rights to waters off the British-Canadian coastline, opened up the Mississippi to navigation, resolved debts Americans owed to British creditors, and provided for fair treatment of American citizens who had remained loyal to Britain during the war.
