Following the establishment of the Commonwealth of Yucatan, a US puppet state, many Mexicans within the nation wished to gain full statehood within the US. This attitude was a result of beliefs that the US only aided the Yucatan from the Maya enough to tap them for resources.

When the Maya Ceasefire was declared in 1862, in response to the War between the States, the Yucatanese settlers [And the White ruling elite] in the commonwealth threatened to support the Confederate cause if the Union did not grant Yucatan full participation in the US government; essentially demanding annexation.

No longer worried about the balance of Slave and Free States, and with the peninsula holding a large part of the US navy, the vote passed congress, annexing Yucatan into the US.
