Just days after General Lee surrendered at Appomattix, John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre, in Washington D.C.

The assassination was part of a three tiered plot to take out VP Johnson and Secretary of State Seward. Johnson was never approached, but Seward was attacked by knife and was disfigured.

Booth shot Lincoln in the back of the head and the president died soon after in the boarding house across the street. The North felt the loss deeply.
