On April 9th, 1865 Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. This surrender marked the functional end of the American Civil War. After exchanging notes the two met in Appomattox. Lee agreed to have the Army of Northern Virginia lay down their arms.
