The Byzantine Empire was also known as the Eastern Roman Empire and it was able to survive centuries after the fall of Rome. It was ruled by Roman law and political institutions and they spoke mostly Latin and Greek. While ruled by the Palaiologan emperors, the Byzantine state suffered. They needed financial help in order to confront the Turkish threats in 1369 but Emperor John V was arrested in Venice before they could. After an Ottoman army took control of Constantinople, the death of Emperor Constantine XI caused the fall of the Byzantine Emperor.
