At the time of the inquisition, there were tens of thousands of Jews and Muslims who had converted to Christianity living all over Spain. These were so called "New Christians". However, the church became convinced that you could not be a true Christian if you were a convert and suspected of some New Christians pretending to convert while still practicing their original religion. The sparked the Spanish Inquisition, a period of time during which New Christians were hunted down and tried for betraying the Christian faith. Many fled the country or were imprisoned, tortured, and executed.
